Fall Lawn Care & Seeding Guide

lawn care seeding lawn seed

Fall is an ideal time of the year to get your lawn weed free and overseeded for a lush, green spring lawn. A lush, full lawn will naturally help block out and prevent future weeds from popping up.

Wannemaker’s Home and Garden offers Vaughan’s and Jonathan Green lawn seed products, as well as numerous complete lawn seed patching products. We also carry Espoma Lawn Soil for preparation. Use topdressing products such as Greenview Seed Success and EZ Straw to help retain moisture, prevent erosion, and discourage wildlife from picking at your lawn seed.

Selecting the Right Lawn Seed

The best product to use will depend on how much sunlight your lawn receives.

  • For reseeding or overseeding a full sun lawn (6 or more hours of sunlight), use a predominately bluegrass lawn seed mixture such as Vaughan’s Masterblend, Vaughan’s Sunny Lawn, or Jonathan Green Sunny Lawn.
  • For lawns receiving 4-6 hours of sunlight, use a sun and shade mixture that consists of a more evenly blended mixture of bluegrass, rye and fescue varieties. Both Vaughan’s and Johnathan Green offer sun and shade mixtures.
  • Lawns that receive less than 4 hours of sunlight require a shade mixture that is heavy on rye and fescue with less bluegrass varieties. Both Vaughan’s and Johnathan Green offer shady Lawn seed mixtures.

Important steps to follow when applying grass seed:

  • Soil Preparation – prepare your soil by loosening top 2-4” of existing soil and replenishing with nutrient rich Espoma Lawn Soil.
  • Topdressing –  after seed application, top-dress with Greenview Seed Success or EZ Straw products.
  • Seed Starter Fertilizer Applications – apply a lawn seed starter fertilizer from Greenview or Jonathan Green to give your new grass seedlings a boost in root development and faster establishment before winter arrives.
  • Proper Watering – maintain a damp soil without over saturation. Water frequently for short amounts of time. After seedlings sprout, reduces watering to once daily for 1-2 weeks to help establish a strong root system.

Follow these steps and enjoy a lush, green lawn!
